"Like the water that makes me, the water inside me, moving from lips to heart, cells to systems and back again in tides of myself, so this water, rising from the heart of the continent, surges from Mackinaw City to Toronto. Here was the lesson that teaches how everything changes, how transition is never complete, how whatever we are is whatever we’ve been, whatever we ever will be".
-- Judith Arcana from her essay, Walking the Lake’s Edge in Winter.

More than anything else Judith Arcana’s profound words explain to me how water stories ignite my senses and cause me to make works of art. At first I relied on personal stories, which referenced the area close to Lake Michigan where I was born and raised. Soon my interest in water exploded beyond nostalgia. Now it encompasses the hydrology and ecology of water worldwide.

In 2002, my artistic expressions about water were lines cut in paper. The cuts produced light, shadow and tangible depth, which seemed appropriate to and a metaphor for the power of water. I have since tied, incised, folded, layered and stretched paper, Mylar, plastic and tape to create two and three dimensional work as well as installations in order to engage viewers because ultimately water stories are not about water but are instead people issues.
