My main purpose of painting is the joy of translating what I see. When I paint directly from nature I often prefer painting Alla Prima, a very direct application of paint. When working in the studio I may build up several layers of paint on the canvas, depending on the subject matter or concept of the painting. There is a push-pull experience with the flat surface to an illusion of movement, rhythm and dimension. I paint a variety of subject matter, landscape, figure, portrait and still life. I also work from memory and imagination. The whole point for me is what the paint can do and my relationship with the painting. It’s best when my mind is quiet and my brushes and hands do the work, it can be a very meditative experience.
